Why this activity? The North Pacific of Costa Rica has the privilege to protects important nesting beaches for different sea turtles: olive ridleys in Ostional Wildlife Refuge, leatherback turtles in Las Baulas National Park. Nevertheless, recent studies show the importance of non protected nesting beaches for black turtles.
The beaches we visit, Playa Nombre de Jesus and Playa Real, are important nesting areas for black turtles that lack of protection. As different as Playa Grande, Las Baulas National Marine Park, the turtles that nest here have to face other threats. Part of our Strategy is to promote ecotourism. A good way is to teach students and groups about the reality of this beaches, the difference with a protected area and how change can be done. Why is this Activity important? The Costa Rican North Pacific beaches are very important for the sea turtles that arrives to nest. The IUCN have considered the black turtles (Chelonia mydas) as endangered species, reason why the environmental education done to groups that will turn into agents of change, important aspect that will help into its conservation.
This activity is a sea turtle education trip focused to interested groups that want to learn more about the difference of the conservation efforts in Las Baulas National Marine Park (PNMB), as protected area for leatherback turtles, and nearby no protected nesting beaches for black sea turtles. What consists the Activity? The objective of this trip is to motivate the participants to develop a sea turtle conservation criteria. This will happen while they learn and see the reality of Playa Nombre de Jesús and Playa Real compared with the conservation model adapted in Playa Grande, Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas.
The trip will start in Las Baulas National Marine Park, in which the group will receive an explanation and a small trip in Playa Grande and the hatchery (this trip do not consider the leatherback turtle sighting tour). After dinner, the group will receive the instructions to visit Playa Real. We will go to this location (30 min approx. from Playa Grande). There we will do a small trekking in the beach, and while the turtle appears, we will give a small speech. The activity will be considered done once we have seen the nesting process. Finally, we will go back to Playa Grande to have the final questions. |
