How to take THe leatherback sighting TOUR?
1. Select a date between October 20th and February 15th. There is more probability to see leatherbacks from November until January.

2. Wait up to 8 days before your selected date, and visit or call the National Park office at +506 2653-0470 ext. 101 to make your reservation.

3. Provide the names of participants, passport numbers* and nationalities to the receptionist (children under 12 do not require reservation).

4. Go to the National Park office at the appointment time given in step 3, look for your reservation and confirm by writing your signature.

5. Receive the speech from the local guides. The maximum waiting time is 6 hours, payment occurs only when there is a turtle in the beach.

*It is not required to take the passport to the tour.

Why this tour?Las Baulas National Marine Park is one of the remaining important nesting beaches for Tropical Eastern Pacific leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), considered critically endangered by the IUCN. In the last 25 years, monitoring programs, conservation actions and government vigilance work in the protection and management of this area crucial for the turtle's reproduction. Leatherbacks play an important role in the marine wildlife as a they occupies unique core feeding and migratory habitats. The Park protects a marine area of 25,180.70 ha (62,222.86 ac) and 948,2 ha (23,430.53 ac) of land that include hills, rivers, estuaries and a Ramsar Site. Learn more.

Important aspectsThe tour occurs during night time based on the high tide, as this increase the probability to receive leatherbacks. Even though it is a nice experience for kids, it is highly exhausting for them to wait up to 6 hours in the Rangers Station (and sometimes there are no turtles at all during the night). To share this experience with children, consider make a reservation on an early shift, from 6 to 12 mid night. What to take to the tour?:

Who give the tour?![]() The tour is done by the Matapalo Local Guides (ASOCAVE), a local association made from different members of close by communities. Depending on the availability, Pecho Amarillo supports in the development of the speech. In other occasions, the Association present a video about the National Park and the leatherback turtles.
