PurposeThe Open Class is an initiative that promotes the learning of the environmental conservation, its importance and threats by using Las Baulas National Marine Park as an “open class”. This way, we seek to motivate the students to learn more the dynamic around the Tamarindo Bay, as they analyze and create their own criteria linked to the topics and the experience, always focused in the conservation culture.
Thus, we motivate the creation of agents of change, who can discern and take in consideration this knowledge for future decision-making, and also consider the importance of the environment in the disciplines in which they will develop. ImportanceCosta Rica’s North Pacific Coast is an important nesting place for different species of sea turtles. In the Tamarindo Bay area is located Las Baulas National Marine Park, consider the main nesting site for the leatherback turtles in all the Tropical Eastern Pacific (Dermochelys coriacea). Likewise, other close by beaches are also important spots for green or black turtles (Chelonia mydas) in which, unfortunately, they lack of protection even though all the sea turtles are considered endangered.
The Tamarindo Bay is also more than turtles, there is a lot of species of flora and fauna that play a significant role to keep the ecological balance. These ecosystems, as the dry forest, mangrove forest and marine-coastal area, are very fragile and all of them are threatened by human activities. On the other hand, there are also different strategies and initiatives to seek its conservation. Activities like these support the execution of Las Baulas National Marine Park environmental education and ecotourism programs. The ActivityPecho Amarillo is committed to promote the dissemination of the National Park, support the conservation efforts in this protected area and in nearby beaches through environmental education. We perform educational activities for groups giving talks and making visits in ecosystems according the topics of interest.
For this reason, based on the topics the educational institutions need to approach, we will develop an speech and a field trip, among which may include a visit to the National Park, sea turtle watching at night (during the nesting season), and others more. Here we promote creativity, so we invite you to tell us which topics we can discuss and analyze with the students in order to assist with education and environmental conservation. |
